A tragic fire broke out aboard the KYPARISSIA (IMO 9618599), a 4,957 TEU container vessel chartered by Maersk, while the ship was discharging containers at Berth 118, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor, Malaysia.
The incident claimed the lives of three crew members and injured three others, marking one of the most serious onboard fires reported in Southeast Asian ports this year.
Details of the Incident
According to local authorities, the fire began around 12:23 p.m. local time, in the lower section of the No. 5 cargo hold. Emergency services from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) responded within minutes, deploying nine firefighters, a rescue supply truck, and a multi-purpose emergency vehicle.
Two tugboats were also mobilized to assist from the waterside, helping to contain the flames. A forward command post was established at the terminal as fire crews, supported by Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) officials, worked to fully extinguish the blaze.
Casualties and Response
Authorities confirmed that the three deceased crew members were of Malaysian, Filipino, and British nationality, respectively.
The three injured crew were immediately transferred to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire, which reportedly originated in the vessel’s lower cargo deck during unloading operations. No environmental pollution or cargo loss to other containers has been reported at this time.
